09. Imobil de apartamente Gr. Georgescu

Gr. Georgescu Apartment Building
1930’ Strada Mendeleev 39

Meant to be admired at an angle, the building on the former Bălcescu Street, presently called Mendeleev, is marked by the tension between the horizontal lines of the main facade and the vertical ones of the side facade. The continuity of the parapets of the three balconies across the most of the facade is composed elegantly but tensed with the pilasters that mark the entire height off the bow-window on the side facade. Even more, architect Jean MONDA detaches another bow-window from the main facade, thusly creating a corner bow-window, composing the two elements found on adjacent facades. The effect is a telescopic one, extracting volumes both in plan and in façade from this spectacular and vibrant corner solution. As a crowning of the simplicity of the rigorously composed volumes and shapes, MONDA sets the round window – manifesto of modernity - on top of the bow-window, and, implicitly, of the facade.
Unfortunately, this entire show is often ignored, due to the different colors of the facades and due to the ivy that covers exactly the corner of the building, like a curtain.
